Today we got up at 5:00 to take the ferry from Skagway to Haines. Haines, on Portage Cove, is perfect in every single way.
When you arrive in town, you are greeted with totem poles on both sides of the welcome sign. A totem pole stands in front of the school, and one watches over the memorial for those of Haines who have passed on. The influence of the native Tlinglets is everywhere.I like that these people honor their past.
Everyone waves when you drive by. I'm not kidding. When we were down at the docks taking with a fisherman and his phone rang, he was too polite to answer it. This is an authentic small town not a tourist area. Wonderful!
Oh, today in the local museum guess who I met? The woman who is in charge of the gift shop is from Warwick, RI, my hometown. If we already didn't know that it's a small world, we certainly do now!
It has been good to have Internet access. Who knows what the next few days will bring...
